The continuing adventures of Kimberly and Willy
My Big Night Out in Cary, North Carolina
Last night was a first but not the last of exploring the cultural scene in the Cary area.
I went to an outdoor concert at the Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Every year the North Carolina Symphony puts on a series called “Summerfest”. Last night was the first concert of the series. I must say it was a glorious setting. Nestled in a hardwood forest and next to a lake the amphitheatre offers a wonderful summer night listening experience.
The evening was very warm so warm that we had to wait until the temperature dropped below ninety degrees.Once it did the symphony performed:
- George Gershwin – Cuban Overture (Ey Carrumba!)
- Aaron Copland – Party scene and the Promise of Living from the Tender land
- Joseph Schwantner – Percussion Concerto (because we had a guest soloist by the name of Evelyn Glennie…all I can say is oh my gosh!!!)
- Handel – Song of Jupiter
- Handel – Hornpipe from the Water music suite (I was waiting for Masterpiece theater to start…never did )
- Vivaldi
- Concerto for Piccolo and Strings adapted for the vibraphone (go figure) this
was so our soloist could give us another amazing performance. She’s an energetic
little thing I must say.
Here is a little bio on her: http://www.ncsymphony.org/whatsnew/index.cfm?id=21
We continued on with Gottschalk’s Night in the Tropics and ended the evening with a rousing rendition of Ravel’s Bolero (appropriate for the sultry evening).
There was a group of high school students that joined in with our soloist on their snare drums too. Needless to say the results was stirring.
I met a very nice group of retired women who included me in their social circle. One woman sits on the board of the symphony and the ballet and she has invited me to a dinner on June 26 at the museum it's a benefit for the symphony. It should be very nice. Another woman was in the fashion industry in New York (she was a hoot!). So it’s started folks. I have started to make friends and acquaintances.

There is another concert (this one is free) tonight Sunday June 8th in yet another amphithreatre called the Sertoma Amphithreatre. The threatre is in Cary’s answer to central park. (Just kidding). The park is called Fred G. Bond Park and its 310 acres. It’s just a short distance from me about a fifteen minute drive and has all sorts of facilities. The North Carolinians love their outdoors and I understanding why…it really is beautiful.
My home is pretty much unpacked. It’s very comfortable and I will be ready for guests as soon as I buy a bed or two. I have posted some photos of my place for your curiosity and viewing pleasure.
